Though it’s an age old tradition that has been honoured for hundreds of years, buying birthday presents for friends and family members is a strange little custom when you think about it. Naturally we all love it when our birthday rolls around and we’re the one faced with a huge pile of presents, in fact there are few things better. Sleepily stumbling down the stairs in your PJs, only to be reminded it’s your birthday by a whopping great big stack of presents kindly provided by your friends and family. Just lovely!

But, whilst we all love receiving presents, buying them is an entirely different kettle of fish. In theory, buying presents that you’re confident your friends and family members will love should be a pretty easy and straight forward task. You (presumably!) know them pretty well by now their interests, hobbies, tastes and so on and so finding something that’s sure to be met with a warm reception when the wrapping paper’s ripped off should really be a piece of cake. The thing is though, it just never is. More often than not, we that we trot off merrily into town, happy in the delusion that this whole present buying thing will take no longer than an hour at the very most, leaving us plenty of time to go to the gym, do a bit of gardening, finally finish that book on our night stand, or whatever else it is we have on our ‘to do’ list. Soon, however, we come to the realisation that this whole present buying lark is much more tricky than originally anticipated and before you know it all ideas of treadmills and pot plants are a distant memory and instead we’re immersed in a fog of ‘what on earth am I going to buy?’ panic.

Furthermore, it seems that this problem is even worse when it comes to buying presents for the men in our lives. With female friends and family, when you’re stuck for ideas and their birthday is fast approaching, there are a number of fail-safe presents you can always turn to that are pretty much guaranteed to be well received. Things along the lines of perfume, chocolates, jewellery and flowers are, for example, always likely to go down well with the ladies. With men however, the options seem to be far more limited basically if you’re running low on time or ideas, the presents most of us plump for are either beer, ties or the dreaded novelty socks. Oh dear.

The mistake that most of us make when looking for presents for male friends or family members is that we choose to conduct the great gift hunt down at the local shopping centre, when instead we’d be much better off sitting down with a nice cup of tea and having a look at what’s available on-line.
